Izzue // Ahead of the Game // Menswear

As often as I drop in and out of Blow PR’s office I always notice this brand, Izzue. Their mens and womenswear is really looking cool at the moment. Absolutely huge in the Far East and looking to take over European the brand should be live on ASOS in the next couple of days.

Grab it while you can! Shopping is a bit out of the question right now as I need to be sensible (launching yourself freelance is not the time to be spending!) so I’ll have to super nice to everyone at Blow and see if I can liberate a piece or two to wear around London Fashion Week.

I’m really liking this Breton jumper and the shirt is lush.

Izzue are all about luxe individualism but at an accessible price (accessories starting at £30). I’m very into it, and like the Riviera feeling they are going for this upcoming summer. So you definitely heard it here first, Izzue are well worth a look this season and you only have to leg it across to ASOS to check them out.

Emporio Armani // Campaign // Spring Summer 2012

I’m really liking the new campaign for Spring Summer from Emporio Armani shot by Alasdair McLellan. On location in Hong Kong and under the creative direction of Mr Armani himself Florian Van Bael looks great here.

I also really want these trousers! How cool are they? I’m definitely feeling a rat pack 50s surfer vibe this summer. Get me some vintage Hawaiian Shirts and some triple pleated lightweight trousers now please!

2012 // Live Better // Murdoch & Denis Robinson

So welcome to the New Year. Isn’t it beautiful! Well to be fair it is January and we are in the Northern Hemisphere, what did you expect? So resolutions and all that, well after promising not have any in a previous post, then sort of ending with one, I’ve settled on two. They’re fairly simple, though the life has taught me simple doesn’t always mean easy.

I’ll be open and honest here, I’ve had depression for most of my adult life though thanks to years of work my bouts are relatively short though no less painful. So my first resolution is a motto I’ve clung to ever since I’ve heard it. One I’ll happily preach to just about anyone that will listen. Oh and one that when things are at their worst is almost impossible to follow up. I said almost!

‘When you find yourself in hell, don’t stop walking you’ll never leave!’

So I shall do my best to live up to this. Shit things are bound to happen in 2012, but let’s keep walking. The second resolution is almost as hard, but it should be a hundred times more fun if not more.

‘Live Better’

This isn’t an excuse to goof off, to dodge work or responsibilities. Far from it. This is me making sure I get as much out of 2012 as I can. This means working harder and enjoying that more. Working harder at work, at friendships, at my relationship with my husband, at enjoying myself and treating myself. You only ever get out what you put in, and it’s all to easy to coast along these days blaming apathy and the lack of anything decent on telly for your woes. So here’s to taking charge and to enjoying more things.

I’ll be honest I may have cheated a little and started a bit early on this one. I think you’ll forgive me. Before Christmas I headed over to Murdock London for a very generously gifted wet shave, and also dropped in to see the very lovely Denis Robinson to get my hair sorted. It was party season and frankly I needed to look my best if I was returning home to the family. A wicked sense of humour abounds in our home and compliments are hard won but much appreciated. I would describe both visits as luxurious in the best possible way. A necessary indulgence and most definitely falling into the Live Better category of self improvement.

So at Murdock in Covent Garden the relaxed and chatty Stephen whipped my scruffy beard into shape. Lying back enjoying the hot towels (before which a very considerate Stephen double checked I wasn’t claustrophobic, good thing too as despite being sooo relaxing I nearly fell asleep I could see why some people may not enjoy it), I realised that regardless of cost I would have to make this a more regular event. I’m not a fan of shaving, so having someone else take care of this chore is definitely worth more than I can say. Not to mention women have been getting facials, manis and pedis for as long as can be remembered, why did gents stop doing this? Ok entrusting some stranger to glide around your chops with a cut throat razor takes a little getting used to. But just do it! Oh and if you see Stephen tell him I sent you along. I left feeling incredible and totally ready to face what ever I could. He also gave me a few handy hints which has made my shaving at home a more pleasurable experience too.

Denis Robinson // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

My second treat, was to visit the talented and lovely Denis Robinson at his quiet studio run by Paul Merritt. I have genuinely never been to a hair studio like this before. Sumptuous doesn’t even begin to cover it. Basically I’m used to whirlwind of Mr Toppers, which is manic, quick and efficient. 37 Gosfield St is another world away. Sky-lit and relaxed it was possibly the first time in a very long time I actually enjoyed the gossipy banter most people have when they get their hair cut, (though that may also have something to do with Denis’ charm). Days later I was still amazed about how my hair just fell into the right place with very little styling required. A sign I believe of Denis’ skills, it’s a mantra he works to, that if a style is difficult for him to produce it’ll be difficult for you to maintain. Again I will definitely be making a return visit, especially if I want a dramatic change for my locks. I trust Dennis to set me down a path that will be easy to keep and look amazing.

So yes, those are my resolutions. Keep Walking and Live Better. Thank you both Murdock & Dennis for helping me on my way. I urge you all to do the same and let’s see what 2012 has to offer.

2011 // Friends, Meetings, Laughs, Tantrums // 2012

And so once again it’s Old Year’s Night. We’ve turned another notch forward on the ever spinning circle of the years and whether you are young or old you’ll probably be saying how the year has once again flown by. How indeed next year will be your year (that is unless of course you happen to be Ryan Gosling, this year was most definitely his), how come this time next year you will be buffer/ no longer single/ healthier/ wealthier..h the list goes on. Well do you know what stop…

Why stop? Well this year I set in stone some very clear objectives. Some I totally nailed (whoop 4hrs 48mins of running and one marathon completed attained), others not so much (I’m on the way to achieving them though so that’s not all bad). There have been some high points: 5th wedding anniversary (mine); London Fashion Week times two; new friends by the bucketload; above mentioned marathon; holidays; I could go on. Low points: loved ones health at times; meetings that didn’t quiet come off so well; drunken nights when dignity and me may have parted company (these were bizarrely often high points too); ridiculous stress. I could again go on but my Lord that would be dull as all hell.

So why stop? Well for a start I always think Dec 31st is kind of an arbitrary point to relaunch your life. If you’re going to do it, just do it, and besides from a bizarrely natural point of view the Winter Solstice would be much better. It’s been viewed as a time of rebirth far longer than our calendar says, and it’s the time when the days begin to grow and develop freeing up daylight for what will undoubtedly be a great summer ahead (not like our last one which was by and large pants weather wise).

Obviously saying this doesn’t mean I dont have goals for the year ahead. It’s not like I take all my own advice (except for fashion, there I am regimentally serious in following my own advice, like not wearing Uggs). Next year I will indeed be more buff (gym is already being blitzed), still married to an amazing man, healthier (see previous gym reference) and wealthier (this will mean much more working, and hopefully many many more posts here). 2012 is already off to a flying start, a friends birthday in Paris, followed by Menswear Fashion Week and Dolce & Gabbana in January alone. It will undoubtedly have a some epically shite points, most years do. It will also contain some phenomenally high points, so let’s bring it on.

On my part I will endeavour to bring you the latest, or at least latest to me menswear news and trends, I’ll be heading to Pitti as well in the summer (I CAN NOT WAIT!!! it’s basically menswear mecca & I don’t mean the bingo hall) so this should get easier. I’ll also be doling out more fashion advice and trends reports as they come. Drop me a note at askbainser@gmail.com with your occasion and budget and I’ll do my best to help. Should you want to work with me on some exciting ventures also drop me a line, lets chat, no seriously I’d love it.

So while 2011 dies a slow (and for me anyway) more than likely inebriated death, I hope you have a great night be it alone or surrounded by friends. Thanks for reading this year, and hope you stick with me for what is looking to be a great 2012.

A Child of Jago // London Fashion Week // Spring Summer 2012

A week is a long time in fashion, one day your in the next your out, well thats what Frau Klum says. But whether you’re in or your out the six days of London Fashion Week are long. I genuinely don’t know how the editors and buyers manage a whole month. Once the fatigue sets it, it’s nearly impossible to shake no matter how amazing the time is you are praying for it to end. There is only so much Prosecco you can take. It is beyond doubt a hard life indeed. So when we got to 4pm on Menswear day my bed was calling. But I had two more shows to see and a party to go to. Seriously it’s a hard hard life. So I, several Japanese buyers, a handful of celebs I didn’t really know, and the good lady herself Vivienne Westwood trekked out to Wiltons Music Hall in East London to see the A Child of Jago show.

Having seen previous collections and having spoken to the show producer I knew this was going to be worth it. I could make lazy comments about how the talent apple rarely falls far from the tree, but let’s be honest there are countless celeb offspring that prove it can regularly be flung to a different county. Though more importantly to do so does Joe Corré a grave injustice. He and co-designer Sam (Barnzley) Armitage ooze talent of their own. Their tailoring skills are fantastic and the desire to entertain during the show and through the collection made this probably my favourite show of the season.

For the aspirant Dick Whittington the streets of London were said to be paved with gold, and this was to be his story. Arriving in London, admiring all that lay before becoming a bon viveur living the high life. I could not have been more excited. Then the wait began. And continued. Then we waited a little more. A little more. I mean I’m used to waiting at fashion week. Nothing starts on time. Ever! The term fashionably late exists for a reason. If a show starts 15 minutes late it’s almost early. But having been brought to our seats just after the run through and ahead of many other guests, after over an hour of waiting even my patience was wearing thin. Not thin enough to leave though, I’m not a madman. The show eventually started right as my hopes of making Asger Juel Larsen evaporated. But that’s another story and frankly you’d need to borrow the skills of Dr Who to make every show you wanted to.

A mixture of sharp tailoring, interesting details, brilliant use of stripes and new shapes was sent down the gold sparkling catwalk. But more than this the models were alive. Full of attitude and life. They laughed, they swaggered, they owned the clothes and the room. These may have been strongly tailored guys but they were still rude boys made you both hope and fear running into in dark alley.

The girls of the show were classy London harlots if such a thing exists.

It’s shows like this that make Fashion Show worth it all. Inspiring dynamic and fun. For all the beauty and splendour of it all, it’s this raw edge that London is famous for. Long may it last!

So after the video teaser which Formichetti is calling a moving mood board. Here’s the actual collection. I must say I really liked it. Sure there were some totally crazy clothes. I won’t be rocking neon green Lycra next summer, well probably not, but in the crazy was a whole lot of cool.

The two suits above are fantastic. The smokey grey is unbelievable and I’m in lust with it. The cut out in the white, which also came down the catwalk as a black/lilac option is brilliant, though reminds me a little of Braille (available in Wolf and Badger)

The jewellery, more like armour was incredible, delightfully impractical, and to be fair the only way you’d catch me in cropped top would be to flash an armour plated stomach!

The body con tops and leggings, (yes leggings!) were also brilliant. I’m not saying get them and stroll down the High St. But as catwalk pieces, inspired. I’ll be hoping the Lycra tops are translated into knitwear as I think they would be phenomenal, and actually something I’d wear.

The shorts were again mid thigh, but thats no shocker. I was however liking the slightly looser fit of them. Still tailored and sharp, but allowing a little more leeway. As for the shoes…I want now, even the crazy neon green flashes. In fact those are the exact ones I want. The plain black ones despite their jagged loveliness just wont cut it.

Formichetti has done Mugler proud with this collection, insanity and accessibility rarely make as good bedfellows as they do here.

Mugler // Brothers of Arcadia // Spring Summer 2012

It looks like Nicola Formichetti may have listened to my plea the other day and moved on from Rick Genest, to some fine Greek Gods of inspiration. In a series of films that are being released we’re getting a glimpse into his inspirations this season.

Opening with some male hotness diving in and out of the surf to a classical soundtrack this explodes like in colour like the Hindu festival of Holi, and then through thumping beats we’re transported in dirty underground club. Apparently the video gets deeper and dirtier on Xtube, and will most definitely NOT be safe for work.

For all my love of tattoos I’m not complaining of the move, now just to see the collection and see if the clothes live up to the sweat of the promos.

Thanks to New York Mag for the vid.
