Moleskine Luggage Tags // Bainser Menswear Blog

How pretty are these? I hate luggage tags, and genuinely don’t use them. I know I should but *crosses fingers and avoids tempting fate* my self and my luggage have never parted company. It has once or twice gotten a slightly later flight than me but otherwise I’ve kept it close. However these lovelies by Moleskine may make me change my mind. My morning stroll through design and fashion blogs spotted these on Cool Hunting, a frankly brilliant website for all things well cool.

They are available online at Moleskine in the UK, US and beyond. For some odd reason I was taken initially to the Italian site. They’re priced at £8.50 each and are available in a wide range of colours. While you’re there checking them out have a bit of a mooch around the site, it’s easy to navigate and the products really aren’t that expensive. Smythson may be perfect for stationery, but these notebooks are beautiful and of great quality. As designer sketching on the go it’s crucial to have something to hand to note down ideas and inspirations. A trick I definitely need to improve on.

Fashionary // Sibling // Bainser Menswear Blog

Though when it comes to sketching accurate and proportional ideas you can not beat Fashionary. A product I think should be on every fashion students required book list. I’ve been using mine for months and they were recently covered by Fantastic Man so you know they’re brilliant. Combining a library of terms, styles, buttons sizes, stockists, contacts as well as very faintly highlighted figure outlines, the sketchbook provides a great tool for any designer. Not only that but they’ve already launched some fantastic collaborations such as the one above with the very brilliant East London design team at Sibling (for whom my love is well known).

So there you have it, brilliant luggage tags, Smythson the home of stationery, lovely notebooks and the ultimate fashion sketchbook all in one post on Friday morning. What more could you want?

Hostem // Chalk Room // Launch

It feels like an age ago this event happened, and to be fair I’ve been back to the store since. The product still looks amazing. The wardrobes, furniture and indeed pig carrier (yes it does exactly that!) still looked phenomenal. You see the I’d been asked nicely to keep schtum about this hidden jewel in Hostem’s crown as a favour. There was a bit of online exclusivity happening, and knowing how difficult that is to maintain I was a good boy and kept quiet. It’s been difficult because my God you need to see this place! But I like to play nice.

Designed by James Russell and Hannah Plumb and full of innovative artisan designers this space is going to evolve in the best rough luxe way impossible. In fact in the unlikely event the owners of the Rough Luxe Hotel,  I would recommend they head down there now and buy up the pieces. (oh and if you are reading I am fully planning to come stay in your hotel one day by the way as need to try it out!)

The party itself was great with crazy scientific cocktails that bubbled and boiled, or weirdly evaporated. Quirky and unique without alienating anyway, just getting us quietly drunk. Absinthe jelly anyone? I met some brilliant new people that night including the brilliant Dacio Lamounier, who’s new trend consultancy will be launching in the very near future, (The photos above and collage are his work). That’s not to mention Mark from Baluba and more. The whole event was great fun and being tucked in the basement of Hostem certainly aided to a slight through the looking glass feel, my return visit confirmed this wasn’t just the cocktails talking.

The staff are knowledgeable not just about the product itself but the designers, their techniques and more. It’s a refreshing change, but comes at a cost. Nothing here is cheap, but thank heavens for that! It’s beautiful crafted quality and its about time people remembered these skills come at a cost.

I loved what’s happening in Hostem when I first visited. I loved the product and environment at the launch. In all I wish this store all the best and hope it continues to build on it’s strength.

H&M // Versace // Resort

Versace for H&M // Bainser Menswear Style BlogH&M Versace // Bainser Menswear Blog

Ok so I normally don’t post High St collaborations. Not from any high brow snobbery, frankly they are most likely the only place I’ll be able to afford luxe labels for a while. But as soon as the press release hits people’s emails the photos are everywhere!! I saw this shot this morning, and have already been discussing it on twitter. It’s on the Telegraph website and am sure hundreds of other blogs already. In the blogosphere right now you cant move for H&M, it’s either the very lovely River Viiperi or Mr Beckham in his new pants, (which if am honest I’m not entirely convinced by, the pants not him).

However I’ve decided I quite like this ridiculously 80s Versace heritage Dressing Gown, trunks and TShirt. It conjures up images of non-descript but luxurious (and possibly not actually real) films from my childhood. This will be the final collab between Donatella and H&M and from what I hear only available online. So be prepared for wailing and thrashing from your nearest fashionisto/a as the site inevitably crashes on launch day.

Anyway enjoy, and let me know which collaboration will be getting your money when it drops…Versace or David B’s pants?

Tom Ford // OWN Visionaries // Documentary

Style Forum Special from Music Guy on Vimeo.

Ok so its 41:32 seconds long. I’ve not watched all of it yet, but I’ve seen the trailers. This is Tom Ford, and the video is great insight into his mind, his creative process and more. Shot by the Oprah Winfrey Network the trailers alone caused great excitement amongst the anyone interested in fashion and this great designer.

It’s amazing so many people I’ve met seem to have a ‘Tom Ford’ story, his drive and ambition is legendary. His resurrection of Gucci will be part of fashion folklore for ever, as will his scandalous and overtly sexual advertising campaigns. Not to mention his film work, his menswear line, and more.

Watch it if for no other reason than it’s Mr Ford for nearly 42 whole minutes.

Milan Menswear // Dolce & Gabbana // Handpicked // Thanks

Dolce & Gabbana // Mario Vivianco

It is without doubt exciting times this Christmas at Bainser.com HQ, (that sounds like I have some swanky office my MacBook on my lap isn’t quite as glamorous if more truthful). Over the last two years I’ve ranted and raved about Menswear. The rights and wrongs, I’ve gone to fashion shows, fallen in love with styling details, interviewed some inspiring individuals such as Nick Wooster, partied, nearly been gobbed on by a model (at the Child of Jago show) and doled out sartorial advice, all in all its happy times.

But 2012 is the time to move it on, so I’ve happily joined the Handpicked Media stable and look forward to working with everyone there. Following this 2012 is starting on a high, my first visit to a fashion week outside of London. I’ve graciously been invited to attend Dolce & Gabbana’s show and I couldnt book my flights soon enough! That’s all done now and I’m counting down the days. I’ll be in Milan for the 14th and 15th Jan so if any other PRs would be even remotely interested in squeezing me in to their shows please let me know. As corny as it is I want to say thanks to the likes of Melanie Rickey & Lee Kynaston who have been great mentors and givers of advice in the last six months to really get things moving.

Enough about me though, scroll back up and check out this great shot by the very talented Mariano Vivanco. This is his first Dolce & Gabbana campaign (though not the first time he’s worked with the house) and it stars a whole bevvy of Italian filmstars. If some brands are about music, Dolce & Gabbana is certainly all about the glamour of the Italian screen. The innate beauty in this shot is wonderful. Having a Maltese grandmother this kind of Mediterranean family scene reminds me of home. You know this family may feud like a Kardashian in front of reality TV camera but they’re loyal to a fault.

Love Brand & Co. // Trunks for Trunks // Swimwear

Love Brand & Co 'Trunks for Trunks'

Ok so yes it’s most definitely chilly and with the snow and sleet on the way. In fact in just over a week it’s actually Christmas! Like proper Christmas, not the overly protracted run up that feels like it starts just days after Easter these days. I can only imagine what it must be like to be a parent with overly hyped up children. Yes the magic of Christmas is beautiful in their eyes, the joy, the excitement, the conflicting hope and fear that they’ve been good enough to get presents from Santa, it’s without a doubt a sight to behold. You know why? Because I only have to see briefly when I visit friends and family that have taken the plunge into parenthood. Dealing with that level of anticipation on a daily basis for nine or ten weeks must be enough to act as a contraceptive all of it’s own. But that’s by the by, as I say it’s winter and perhaps a slightly surprising time to be launching a swimwear line. But not for the folks at Love Brand & Co

Launching in the very beautiful Hempel Hotel in West London, to a crowd of famous faces young and old, from Nicky Haslam to ‘Made in Chelsea’ favourites Spencer Matthews and Hugo Taylor, the brand saw a great start to its campaign. The night sponsored in part by Tattinger, was most certainly a success and raised £13,000 for The Elephant Family. Like several other ethical and eco-focused labels Love Brand & Co, look to give back a portion of their profits to charity (5%). This is a growing trend and I definitely welcome it. Especially if done in as transparent and clear way as Love Brand appear to be. Launching with ‘Trunks for Trunks’ the company plans to expand with new ranges in 2012, each range will have a distinct and different charity linked to it.

Efforts like this need to be praised as often they aren’t clear in what they set out to achieve or the level of donation is pitiful. The fashion buying public wont just buy anything, and regardless of the cause if the product is wrong no one is going to be buying. Luckily Love Brand have managed to get this spot on, with 15 trunks for both men and boys now available online and in Selfridges.

I’ll admit I’m more of the smarter Orlebar Brown or Aussiebum wearing man, but I know these will be a massive hit. Especially amongst Villebrequin fans. The colours were bright, the prints imaginative and witty. The finishing touches were also full of wit and charm. Priced at £128, they are expensive without being prohibitive especially as they are pitching in at the Villebrequin end of the swimwear market.

So if you’re lucky enough to be running screaming from the impending doom of January’s weather (I think December has so far lulled us into a false sense of security and worse is yet to come), I would definitely recommend these.

Bainser Menswear Dandy Lines Collection

It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these posts. But here’s a look at some of my own work, sketches and designs. Though my core style values have remained the same I’d definitely say things have evolved since I sketched these. Unfortunately my most reason work is embargoed by the office. I’ll try and sneak somethings through in the new year, but by the time I can it’s often already in store.

In the depths of winter I can be seen in the great coat. It’s too warm to wear any other time.

Oh and it’s not just about the men, here’s a capsule collection I did for womenswear…
