Spicebomb // Viktor + Rolf // Fragrance

I am ridiculously fussy about fragrances and normally fall back to an old faithful I’ve worn for the last 15 or so years. Looking back I attended a launch event for that too, so who knows how Spicebomb will fare. Not having attended that many I’m still quite fresh faced and intrigued by the whole thing. To be honest promise me free champers and canapés and I’ll pretty much rock up at anything. But everything started very pleasantly in the drawing room of the Charlotte St Hotel, introductions were made and we were regaled as to why Spicebomb, the potent brother of Flowerbomb had come into being. When without warning we told to grab our coats and follow two handsome gents into the cold night air.

I’m all for a magical mystery tour, the excitement of not knowing where you’ll end up is a great icebreaker if you dont know that many people. Though you’d never think it I am in fact quiet shy, so icebreakers and introductions are crucial for me. Obviously once I break through the shyness there is very little that can shut me up. This includes being shepherded into a car park lift, with fifty or so strangers and then being released into a pitch black room with nothing but a TV showing static. Yep still chatty chatterson even in the face of what could only be the opening scene of a horror film and guess who’d be the first to go..yeah me the chatty one!

But Viktor + Rolf had thankfully not decided to let a bunch of bloggers fight to the death in some kind of Battle Royale spectacular, instead after a quick film, the ‘bomb’ exploded in shower of glitter and scent. There were squeals (not mine) when the bomb went off. It was pretty loud to be fair. But these were quickly replaced by comments of how despite being strong (it really is!) Spicebomb is actually a gorgeous smell.

Coming in a grenade shaped bottle, which to open you pull the V+R seal much like a pin, the combination of spices is ferocious. Once this calms down which it does quiet quickly you are left with a heady and seductive scent. I’ve been wearing constantly since and have received countless compliments. It isn’t for the faint hearted, but more importantly it is like no other scent I know.

It’s available nationwide from the 7th of March, but if you’re in London drop down to Harrod’s who have it exclusively til then. At £45 for 50ml it’s well worth it.

2012 // Live Better // Murdoch & Denis Robinson

So welcome to the New Year. Isn’t it beautiful! Well to be fair it is January and we are in the Northern Hemisphere, what did you expect? So resolutions and all that, well after promising not have any in a previous post, then sort of ending with one, I’ve settled on two. They’re fairly simple, though the life has taught me simple doesn’t always mean easy.

I’ll be open and honest here, I’ve had depression for most of my adult life though thanks to years of work my bouts are relatively short though no less painful. So my first resolution is a motto I’ve clung to ever since I’ve heard it. One I’ll happily preach to just about anyone that will listen. Oh and one that when things are at their worst is almost impossible to follow up. I said almost!

‘When you find yourself in hell, don’t stop walking you’ll never leave!’

So I shall do my best to live up to this. Shit things are bound to happen in 2012, but let’s keep walking. The second resolution is almost as hard, but it should be a hundred times more fun if not more.

‘Live Better’

This isn’t an excuse to goof off, to dodge work or responsibilities. Far from it. This is me making sure I get as much out of 2012 as I can. This means working harder and enjoying that more. Working harder at work, at friendships, at my relationship with my husband, at enjoying myself and treating myself. You only ever get out what you put in, and it’s all to easy to coast along these days blaming apathy and the lack of anything decent on telly for your woes. So here’s to taking charge and to enjoying more things.

I’ll be honest I may have cheated a little and started a bit early on this one. I think you’ll forgive me. Before Christmas I headed over to Murdock London for a very generously gifted wet shave, and also dropped in to see the very lovely Denis Robinson to get my hair sorted. It was party season and frankly I needed to look my best if I was returning home to the family. A wicked sense of humour abounds in our home and compliments are hard won but much appreciated. I would describe both visits as luxurious in the best possible way. A necessary indulgence and most definitely falling into the Live Better category of self improvement.

So at Murdock in Covent Garden the relaxed and chatty Stephen whipped my scruffy beard into shape. Lying back enjoying the hot towels (before which a very considerate Stephen double checked I wasn’t claustrophobic, good thing too as despite being sooo relaxing I nearly fell asleep I could see why some people may not enjoy it), I realised that regardless of cost I would have to make this a more regular event. I’m not a fan of shaving, so having someone else take care of this chore is definitely worth more than I can say. Not to mention women have been getting facials, manis and pedis for as long as can be remembered, why did gents stop doing this? Ok entrusting some stranger to glide around your chops with a cut throat razor takes a little getting used to. But just do it! Oh and if you see Stephen tell him I sent you along. I left feeling incredible and totally ready to face what ever I could. He also gave me a few handy hints which has made my shaving at home a more pleasurable experience too.

Denis Robinson // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

My second treat, was to visit the talented and lovely Denis Robinson at his quiet studio run by Paul Merritt. I have genuinely never been to a hair studio like this before. Sumptuous doesn’t even begin to cover it. Basically I’m used to whirlwind of Mr Toppers, which is manic, quick and efficient. 37 Gosfield St is another world away. Sky-lit and relaxed it was possibly the first time in a very long time I actually enjoyed the gossipy banter most people have when they get their hair cut, (though that may also have something to do with Denis’ charm). Days later I was still amazed about how my hair just fell into the right place with very little styling required. A sign I believe of Denis’ skills, it’s a mantra he works to, that if a style is difficult for him to produce it’ll be difficult for you to maintain. Again I will definitely be making a return visit, especially if I want a dramatic change for my locks. I trust Dennis to set me down a path that will be easy to keep and look amazing.

So yes, those are my resolutions. Keep Walking and Live Better. Thank you both Murdock & Dennis for helping me on my way. I urge you all to do the same and let’s see what 2012 has to offer.

Murdock London // Murdock Man // Necessary Indulgence

Last week the very lovely crowd at Murdock London invited me along to the launch of their new online magazine The Murdock Man. The party was conveniently located in their delightful Covent Garden store a strong armed stone’s throw from my office. A refined party on the way home will always warm my heart. Unfortunately the powers that be decided my afternoon and early evening would be spent in Clapham Junction going over the fine details of Autumn Winter 2012 with a customer. If I’m honest I’ll be glad to put this season to bed and get working on Spring Summer 2013 in a couple of weeks. So unfortunately I arrived a little late to the party, but just in time to meet Michael from AnastasiaDuck and become aquainted with the very lovely Shelly. We’re both Irish and as it turned out went to school just around the corner from each other. No doubt we have plenty of friends in common at home.

The mulled cider flowed freely, and has rocketed up my list of suitable winter warmers. Its fruit juice, with more fruit and some spices, delicious and am sure should be available on the NHS for any malady whatsoever. Along with gorgeous mincepies and some pulled pork sandwiches my hunger pangs were also taken care of. More cider, then another traditional cure all of a Hot Toddy followed. As we all chatted merrily away, in the refined luxury of the shop. Covent Garden is Murdock’s flagship store so has the best mix of products as well as of course the barbers.

Reading The Murdock Man, I really enjoyed the interview with David Waddington founder of one of the most entertaining venues in London, Bistrotheque , but also the etiquette to going to a proper barbers. I’ll admit I’m often intimidated going to a new barber, I’ve no rational reason why, but this really helped. Though some of the advice shouldn’t need to be printed. If you’re paying decent money to be pampered why on earth would you answer your mobile? Murdock ask you to keep phone calls to a minimum, I say turn your mobile off. It’s 45 minutes where you can totally switch off and relax. Enjoy it.

Looking around though I could easily have been like a kid in a candy store, the books covered everything the modern man need know, and more! From hedonists guidebooks to Debrett’s Guide for the Modern Gentleman the collection almost had me wishing for the days when well meaning aunts and uncles would give you book tokens instead of cash at Christmas.  The products on offer from simple leather holdalls, (complete win in my eyes), to every possible shaving accouterment, lather and cream, were brilliant. Even better was the gift box which arrived for me this morning at home. How I managed to run out the house without opening I will never know. Just in time for Christmas, I’m told these boxes are available at John Lewis, starting at the not ridiculous £54. Not for everyday use, but isn’t time we gents allowed ourselves some quality indulgence in the bathroom. I will of course report back on how I got on with the products.

As you can tell I’m pretty smitten with the whole Murdock set up, and I’ve only heard good things from friends who’ve availed of their services already. I’m booking in for a shave sometime soon to get everything looking pristine for the holidays. A traditional wet shave at the hand of a skilled barber is most definitely a necessary indulgence, that will leave you feeling brilliant. So if you’re in London, book an appointment. If not check out The Murdock Man for some well crafted grooming ideas and more. In fact you may even see little oul’ me, looking somewhat bedraggled it has to be said. Still it had been a long day.
