Persol // Sunnies // Wants

My gorgeous RayBans were recently liberated from my possession by a here to yet unknown felon. If I were the forgiving kind I’d wish them well. In this instance I most certainly am not as I really loved those sunnies, so I hope the blaggard is cursed with some pox, or at best being ridiculously unphotogenic everytime they were my glasses.

In the meantime the hunt for something new goes on, these Persols fit the bill very nicely. I may just have to persuade the hubby to avoid wearing his plain black ones when we’re out together.

Wahoo! People listen to me. I was delighted to see that Mr. FedEX had delivered these beautiful Persols to my friend when he posted them on his blog.

Growing up in Dublin we often traded style advice and comments, and this seems to have continued into our thirties despite living in two seperate cities, neither of which is our home town.

Conversely my friend berated me for not including RayBans in my original post on summer shades. Guess what I ended up getting, yeah a pair of vintage RayBans.

Look what the FedEx man just delivered…and just in time for the holidays!

Father’s Day Gift // All about me // Mr Porter

So my Dad is totally a traditionalist, which to anyone that’s ever met him is no shock. Whilst I grow up and appreciate more and more what he’s done for me, we are still poles apart when it comes to fashion.

So during my peruse of Mr Porter ‘researching’ the last post, I wondered which of the five Dad’s I would be. Through a process of elimination that took all of two seconds I figured I’d be the hipster dad.

Our kids who might I add, have yet to be born, adopted or paid for with nectar points are going to be smart, funny and cutting. I will obviously instill in them the confidence that it took me until my 30th to obtain from day one. Thing is with them being quiet so cool, I will have no choice but to up my game.

I’ll most definitely have to up my game in terms of style, for as much as I will love my children they wont be out doing me, regardless of how adorable they look (Oh and they will look adorable, almost to the point of it being evil). So here’s what they would be getting me this year. They’d better have been saving up their imaginary pocket money thats all I can say.

This Hartford Cardigan is lush! The amount I want this is matched only by how cool the Margiela feather tshirt is. But I’ll be honest both of these pale into insignificance when compared to my true want. These Persol sunnies are amazing. They’re the perfect answer to Raybans, not everyone has them, and the most famous wearer was Steve McQueen. The man that practically invented the word cool.

Right kiddies time to break open that imaginary piggy bank, and start getting me some non imaginary pressies.

Sunglasses // Men // Summer

There are times, often on a Saturday or Sunday morn, that I’m sure I’m part Mogwai. Sunglasses are an essential. I’ve done expensive, a beautiful pair of Oakley T-wires.

Oakley T Wire // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

They were pretty much perfect for my face and even if I say so I looked pretty fit in them. But they sadly met a death underfoot whilst camping at Brighton Pride. Apparently I can send them to Oakley who will fix them for free. I’ve know this for nearly two years and they still sit in their little box all forlorn and twisted out of shape.

I’ve done cheap, thank you Topman. Genuine love for last summers matt colour blocked RayBan inspired numbers. Whilst neither my red nor my blue pair lasted particularly long at £12 who am I to complain.

So it’s now June and I am without a pair, and left squinting like a newborn, unable to properly admire the hotness summer brings without looking like a bit of a perv. The security a pair of sunnies gives you to eye up randoms must never ever be underestimated. They also hide disdain better than I ever could. Which is yet another reason to invest. But I’ve tried on every cheap pair I can find and they aren’t sitting just right, so a summer of near blindness looks like a real possibility. I’m gutted. Maybe it’s time to bite the bullet again and fork out some decent cash.

But with who? Well I’m clearly in love with Glassing. So that could well be an option. Especially the green aviator style ones.

Failing that we have the following contenders…..

Persol the brand worn by Steve McQueen. Get in!

Instant vintage cool. Yes please. Especially these 2989S, thank you very much! Which are available over at Oi Polloi

Oliver Peoples Sunglasses // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

Next up we have these beauts from Oliver Peoples. I’ve clearly not moved on from loving a bit of vintage framing and tortoiseshell.

Again another lovely vintage look. I’m also liking the scarf/jumper here, but feel this may be slightly less easy to pull off round LDN, than posing in a Riva. The sunnies, I’m guessing Armani, but its difficult to tell.

Oakley Sunglasses // Oki Ni // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

I could always fall back on the oul faithful of Oakley, and these Frogskins are available at Oki Ni. But as lovely as they are I’m not into the branding down the arm.

Toms Eyewear // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

Or if I was being a bit charitable I could go for these from TOMS. Ok so they aren’t yet available on the UK site , which is quite frankly a crying shame! But I love the ideology of TOMS. For every pair of shoes or glasses in this case you buy, they donate a pair to people in the developing world. Guilt free fashion is somethign I can live with. Especially when it looks this good.

For those in the know Persol are cooler than Ray Bans. I mean they were the favoured glasses of style god Steve McQueen. But just check these out. So cool, you’d almost be forgiven for wearing them inside. (Though obviously not a night cos quite simply then you are a twat, sorry to swear but you are)
If you’re looking for something just a bit different from the ever prevalent Wayfarer these bad boys are definitely the right direction .
Persol aren’t cheap starting around £180 from Sunglasses hut and going upwards of £250. But are most certainly a great investment. The ones above are available from Oi Polloi (click on the image to go straight there) and are £199.
If you’re still in any doubt how cool you’ll look then check out Mr McQueen below!
