Anyone for tennis?

Hurrah for Wimbledon opening today…as English as well a….New York Deli
A cap on immigration you say, really and how exactly are you going to enforce this. You know what with 80% of migrants coming from the EU. Well? mmmm? No I’m not so sure either. But I know a good place to start. Wimbledon. Yep you heard me glorious SW19, home of none other than the Wombles. Oh dont get me wrong I’m not about to evict Uncle Bulgaria and co. After all I’m fairly sure the Wombles are indigenous people/animals to Wimbledon and as such deserve protection. Keep littering people of Wimbledon and keep the Wombles in a job.

To be fair its not really the whole of Wimbledon I’m ranting about, just the annual Cliff Richard concert that scheduled for a couple of weeks. (Though with the new roof on Centre Court maybe he’ll actually get a summer holiday this year and not have to save us from a rain/champers induced boredom). You see the great British sports event of the summer has like our dear ladybirds been the victim of an interloper in my eyes. The Harlequin ladybird of Ralph Lauren. This isn’t the first time this has happened and it’s just not on….it’s just not cricket is it. (Yes, yes I know its tennis!) Ralph Lauren is once again the official clothing sponsor of Wimbledon. No really! Him of the American Polo shirts is the official clothing of two weeks of weather permitting great tennis.

I hate to sound all British jobs for British workers ranty,it just isn’t my style. However with the wealth of British talent and designers is there really any need for an American company to be so heavily involved with something as British as Pimms, strawberries & cream, & high tea. From Barbour to Hackett, Burberry to Aquascutum there are plenty of high end British names that could and should be representing an event the whole world find synonymous with England & Britain.

Also dont get me wrong I have nothing against Ralph Lauren. When it comes to the American sports look he cant be beaten. But its not the quality of his work I’m having a rant about. I think the clothes themselves are prefect summer attire. The tailored shorts classic and the cricket jumper ideal for those summer evenings when we’ve been lulled into a false sense of warmth by our fickle weather. It is after all a look I’ve been channelling and working on this summer myself. Whats not to love.

But lets be honest Big Ben isn’t sponsored by Patek Philippe, the Queen doesn’t rock up to events in a Maserati and Wimbledon should really dress appropriately at her own garden party. Ralph thanks but no. Now would you like a cup of tea and maybe some of Mrs Smiths from number 32’s fruit salad before you leave?
