More from the shoot...
It’s time for the holidays, am off to sunny Spain in 20 days and frankly I need some new trunks. I have the traditional AussieBums ready to go from last year, and will probably be ordering some more. But as ever the clash between wallet and desire means the shorts (well actually two styles three ways!) will most likely be out of my reach. It pains me! Anyone that has been following this blog will know exactly what shorts I mean. It’s not like I ever shut up about them. It is of course the very lovely Orlebarbrown Bulldog & Setter.
What’s worse is that despite being invited to their fifth birthday party work commitments kept me away, (meeting the very lovely Josephine of Singtank, and their amazing performance were worth it), so I have yet to be able to meet the guys and actually give them credit face to face. Oh and I was hoping against hope a pair of shorts may have been in the goody bag.
Honestly I wish they’d stop collaborating with the likes of Nick Wooster and raiding the Getty Images collections for incredible prints. There will come a point soon where I can no longer make up excuses and will just have to fork out for great pair of trunks. But if any of you are around the new Vigo St store and fancied being ever so lovely. The shorts I’d like are as follows.
1. Fifth Anniversary Shorts with Diving Print
2. Nick Wooster Camo Print in Blue (available as Setter or a Bulldog Short)
3. Bulldog Geometric Print in Grey
Failing that I’ve also just spotted these two great pairs from Robinson les Bains on Mr Porter. Definitely hitting high points on my wishlist. The fit looks great, and am loving the prints.
Summer is coming, no really it is, somewhere beyond the rain, somewhere where the Gulf Stream returns to it’s proper place, there is summer. Like some long lost cousin we will welcome it with open arms, when it finally arrives. I mean ok it’s only just May and technically summer doesn’t start for at least another month but that’s beside the point.
I don’t like waiting for anything least of all sunshine, my Maltese heritage means I long for the summer months. But on the plus side it means I can save up for these! Orlebar Brown are one of, if not my favourite mens swimwear brands. Luxurious and stylish, they perfectly manage that awkward pool/lunch/cocktail combo.
So with this in mind it’s no great surprise that Mr Porter have teamed up with them for a stunning capsule collection. Comprising of 6 pieces Orelbar Brown have worked with the David hicks estate, the graphic prints make a great addition to anyones wardrobe. I saw them at the recent Mr Porter party and frankly the only problem may be that pretty much every menswear blogger attending is currently hatching plans to make them their own. Priced aat £160 for the shorts and £260 for the jacket they’re sure to sell out soon.

This is Bryan Boy’s friend Dr Manu, I certainly approve! I also want his sunglasses! Lots!
Yes I know I may have alluded to short sleeve shirts giving one the appearance of working in IT or perhaps satanding behind a trolley several thousand feet in the air. My opinion on this still stands, but I’m fickle, I like things I shouldn’t.
So should you! That’s how fashion grows. We see things new, things different, things that should be ugly (short sleeve shirts) and someone’s found a new way to do them. Then suddenly they’re pretty. (This rule does not work for Crocs or Uggs, which will always always be foul!)
So what’s to like about the shirt? Well the pattern is great. I love the fact the sleeves are tight into arm and not flappy. I also love how the guy has buttoned it all the way to the top. I would never do this! I’m practically Burt Reynolds and Tom Fords love child when it comes to showing off heavage!
Still loving this, and will now be keeping an eye out for some new properly fitted short sleeve shirts for my goodself in the future. I think the secret here is stay clear Mambo (you aren’t 16 and on the beaches at Biarritz anymore), stay clear of plain colours better suited to the office (negating IT resemblance), or anything that may appear to have space for a name badge.

So my photos may be trapped on the MacBook for now. However I couldn’t resist a quick post about these amazing sunnies I spotted last night. Thankfully managed to hunt down some pics to show you. Glassing are set to hit the Wolf and Badger shop floor this season, and I am most definitely in love with them. They’re hand finished meaning each pair is unique. The frames range from classic to the more edgy, and having tried on a pair of stunning green aviators last night I am besotted. For a start they actually suited my face. Aviators never ever do!

Unfortunately the night was drawing to a close meaning I didnt have the time to bag them for myself. But the summer is set to be long and hot so I’m sure I’ll have time and reason to return!
More importantly this is just a taster of the loveliness I saw last night. A balmy evening in W11, Pimms and exciting fashion. I was happier than a pig in the proverbial.

No I’m not being cruel, but every so often I am going to drop some Summer images into the blog. We all need that summery lift every now and again, this gent in his Riva is going to do just that.
Just imagine chilling on the Thames, champagne on ice, fresh strawberries just in reach and the tan coming back. Surrounded by friends what more could you ask for? So what if it’s more a random patch of grass than a Riva, and cava than Tattinger get ready to soak up the sun.
More importantly grab that sun earlier than everyone by layering up your Polos. Layering is great way to transition through seasons, but also a way to bring to colour and highlights into your look. Here the blue polo ties in with the highlights of the boardshorts. It’s subtle but strong.

Remember when the sun actually had some heat in it.
So do I, vaguely, but just in case you forgot here’s what it should feel like. Simple, clean and young.
I’m just going to bask in the warmth of this shot for a while, and dream of the summer.
Enjoy and keep it in mind when the sun returns sometime in late June

I’d love to pretend I’m above the preppy rugby boy look I sported in my youth. But I’m not, the dubarrys, dockers and rugger shorts of my mid teens will follow me forever.
Thankfully they’ve been restyled by Michael Bastian for Gant and are now eminently cooler. No longer shall it be a point of Heino in the Burlo, before heading to Slapperface Jacks for me. (Bizarre South County Dublin reference - if you didnt get it, don’t worry. If you did Ross O’Caroll Kelly is looking for you)
But back to the clothes! Whats not to love? Pop your collar and rock the Ivy League look, just dont go shaving your legs as the model on the left appears to have done.

By now your summer look should be well worn in. My white short shorts have seen many a sunny day, and the legs are looking nicely tanned as a result. However if you’re in any doubt on how to style it out in some short shorts, then look no further than this man here.
The crumpled shirt and shorts are a brilliant resort look. You can picture him jumping off a yacht in the Caribbean or Cowes. His shirt isn’t ironed simply because they don’t have one on board, and frankly who cares.
I love the fact that his shirt is wrinkled. It adds some character to his whole look. And those red shorts are a stand out!

After my post about grabbing a little bit of the neon loving trend for yourself without being looking like you’ve been babysitting hyperactive five year old armed with a highlighter pen, a few people (well one in particular, but that’s enough for me) have asked what other trends I think are going to be big.
It seems an age ago that Pitti Uomo happened, and in fashion terms it is. Like nearly a month! Anyway for those of outside of the industry Pitti is basically a huge trade show where several high end brands show off what they’ll be doing next season. Buyers, designers, stylists, anyone who can get a ticket and a hotel in Florence goes. As of yet not me though, but I’m working on it, so this photo is courtesy of non-other than The Sartorialist himself (click on the image to go through to his blog). With all these fashionistos in one place its the perfect spot to grab inspiration for your own wardrobe. How these guys look effortlessly cool in the searing sun is beyond me but thats Italians for you.
This season has been about the short tailored short and while this will continue in my opinion next summer expect to see lots of this about. Tailored jacket & combat shorts. I’m a bit shocked by this its not a look I would have first thought of. For a start do not just grab some dull combat shorts that have no life in them. They need to be chunky and robust, but then not so much you look like you really have just gotten back from a tour in Iraq. The jacket also needs to be a bit more relaxed than your general formal suit jacket. Getting a good jacket needed set you back an arm and a leg either but will look great and you can team it with jeans or other casual looks.
So there you have it, Bainsers next prediction for summer, wear it now and be ahead of the game, wear it next summer and by the end of the season people will be following your style advice not mine.
webUomo is fast becoming one of my favourite street style sites. I really wish I could read Japanese to have even an iota of what they’re saying. As I’ve said before Google translate isnt the best, though its better than nothing.
Anyway back to this guy and his Piaggio. Effortless Talented Mr Ripley cool for the modern day. This is all about getting into the Riviera swing, relaxing like those lucky enough to chill on the shores of the Med. London is loving the sun this week (please may it last the weekend am planning some quality basking), but often with the torture of tubes and the frantic speed of things here we forget to take a step back and enjoy the sunshine. The light cardigan means Mr Ripley 2010 will be nice and warm once the sun sets and before the cocktails kick in.
Come on people this is the country of cider, Pimms and strawberries & cream…summer was made for us. Lets stop looking like a group of lost surfers and more like someone that has misplaced his Riva after a rather boisterous night out with some models.

It takes bravery and dedication to pull off a look like this. However, dilute it down from the editorial and all the pieces are not just wearable but a great way to get colour into your wardrobe.
If I’m honest I desperately need to get more colour into my wardrobe, its something most men could do with. Colour is not just for the ladies and it really makes you stand out. Dominated by indigo, navy, midnight, and well basically blue along with black & white I’m slowly starting to explore other colours. Brights and colour in general are a perennial trend in the summer, us fashiony people have a tendency to rename things on occasion to make them sound newer. (Shh dont tell anyone!) Pastels also tend to creep in every year here and there so thats worth a shot too.
I know budgets can be tight and people want something they can definitely wear without looking like a berk. The good thing is during the summer months sartorial rules are relaxed a bit and experimentation is welcomed. So dont be afraid to mix it up.
If you’re still a bit nervous about jumping into colour headlong, try it out with a few accessories such as belts, braces, ties, etc though prob best not all at the same time.
What am I doing, well yellow is making more of an appearance (another warning here if you hate wasps & bees etc this can be a colour to avoid….they can think you’re a giant flower), and I’m heading to Uniqlo to make sure I grab something bright. I’m thinking Wimbledon green and possibly a bit of lilac.Who knows? I’m also getting more into the preppy tailored shorts look but more on that to come.

One Mans Style is a great blog with the simple premise of showing four shots to encapsulate a lifestyle. This shot just jumped out at me. Its summer in a shot. It has totally made up my mind come payday I’ll be getting white jeans as well as tailored shorts. Deck shoes, and canvas pumps. Now all I need is the sun to stay so I can build my tan and I’ll be the happiest bunny.
Hang on tight while we grab the next page
