Black Ponyskin Biker Jacket Topman London Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2012 Menswear

Ok so it’s a blurry shot from my iPhone, but for me this jacket was one of the highlights of a great Topman show. I’ll review the rest once I’ve sorted out my photos including the fact myself and Style Cupid, had a great view to admire the always tasty Mr David Gandy!

In the meantime here is the beautiful ponyskin biker jacket, I immediately tweeted about! I love it.

Ask Bainser // Shoes // Brown but not Brogues!

Dilemma: I’ve taken to wearing dark jeans and smart shirt/pullover to work. Finding nice shoes to match is a bit of an issue. I like the idea of brogues - but a lot of them are very ‘grandad’, with big, clunky soles. The bright, orangey tan colour can also be a turnoff. And finding a nice, slim pair (rather than big and clownish) is also a challenge!
Apart from brogues, is there another style I should look at? Subtle enough to wear with a navy suit would also be a plus…
Budget: €150-170(ish)
Thanks

Jack

Hi Jack

Ok I’ll admit I’m not too up to speed on the state of show shopping back at home so had to do a spot of googling to check what stores are now in Dublin. I’ll be honest I was a bit impressed. Clearly places like the Dundrum shopping centre are bringing in new stores despite erm, well lets just acknowledge the economic situation at home isn’t exactly rosie and move on.

One of my favourite shops at the moment is Aldo. Their shoes are good quality, fashion lead, and not stupidly priced. Obviously Office and Schuh are ever present, but for this task I’d certainly give Schuh a miss. I’m not really enamoured with their formal range at the moment. Timberlands, yes, trainers, yes but formalwear not so much.

Right lets start with Aldo. For some reason their site wont let me check out € prices. But the two I’ve picked are brand new in store and should definitely fulfil the brief. The price here is £100 so I’m guessing it’ll be approx €150. Aldo Decost Shoe // Bainser Menswear BlogGundbald Aldo // Bainser Menswear Style
On the left we have the DECOST, I like how it’s a little distressed but should polish up well. The toe isn’t too square, which I can’t stand. It also isn’t too pointed which might make the shoe too dressy for the office. On the right we have the GUNBALD, this clearly stays away from looking too orange. It’s a burgundy/oxblood shoe and I think would look great with deep indigo jeans. Again I like how it is gently distressed without looking overly worn.

I am a huge fan of Mr Hare’s shoes and would love to be able to afford them, thankfully he’s done a collaboration with Topman (again I don’t know if they’ll be available at home sorry) I also these are black and you’ve specifically asked for brown shoes, but never mind that. These are the least dressy ones, I personally really want the patent and suede version, but recommending those would really be ignoring the brief.

I also thought BT2 would be a good place to look, but frankly their website is rubbish! As is Brown Thomas’ so I have no idea who they stock, what price ranges they are at or even if they are worth looking at. I’m guessing they will be and while you’re on Grafton St you can always nip into the Bailey for a pint.
I hope this helps.

Cheers

Nick

Ask Bainser & Bainser.com has not received any incentive for recommending these products they are just a marker of my own taste.

Topman Peacoat // Affordable Design // Menswear

TopMan Peacoat // Bainser Menswear Style

Each season Topman and Topshop support up coming and less well known designers in terms of shows and presentations.  In return Topman also gets them to reinterpret some great original menswear pieces. We’ve already had the black trouser and this season it is the turn of the peacoat.

Priced at the ridiculously reasonable £130 these will no doubt sell out in record time. My favourites are by Todd Lynn and James Small. I would gladly have either of these. The cut and fabrication from what I can see online looks great. With contrast sleeves continuing to be a trend I’m more swayed to James Small’s look.

Thing is if you don’t fancy either of them, there are four more options to choose from Timo Weiland, Topman Design, Alistair Mackie & Tim Hamilton. Click through the above photo (unashamedly half-inched from the Topman website, but I’m hoping they won’t mind), to check them all out.

These collaborations have long since been my favourite as they tend to be more edgy and in keeping with the designers original work than many others available on the high street. Also with Topman and Topshop’s continued support for the NewGen designers you can’t really go wrong.

On second look it actually becomes more difficult than I originally thought as to who my favourite Peacoat is by. Damn it! I can really only afford one. This is not going to be an easy choice.

Prices range from £130-180

Sunglasses // Men // Summer

There are times, often on a Saturday or Sunday morn, that I’m sure I’m part Mogwai. Sunglasses are an essential. I’ve done expensive, a beautiful pair of Oakley T-wires.

Oakley T Wire // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

They were pretty much perfect for my face and even if I say so I looked pretty fit in them. But they sadly met a death underfoot whilst camping at Brighton Pride. Apparently I can send them to Oakley who will fix them for free. I’ve know this for nearly two years and they still sit in their little box all forlorn and twisted out of shape.

I’ve done cheap, thank you Topman. Genuine love for last summers matt colour blocked RayBan inspired numbers. Whilst neither my red nor my blue pair lasted particularly long at £12 who am I to complain.

So it’s now June and I am without a pair, and left squinting like a newborn, unable to properly admire the hotness summer brings without looking like a bit of a perv. The security a pair of sunnies gives you to eye up randoms must never ever be underestimated. They also hide disdain better than I ever could. Which is yet another reason to invest. But I’ve tried on every cheap pair I can find and they aren’t sitting just right, so a summer of near blindness looks like a real possibility. I’m gutted. Maybe it’s time to bite the bullet again and fork out some decent cash.

But with who? Well I’m clearly in love with Glassing. So that could well be an option. Especially the green aviator style ones.

Failing that we have the following contenders…..

Persol the brand worn by Steve McQueen. Get in!

Instant vintage cool. Yes please. Especially these 2989S, thank you very much! Which are available over at Oi Polloi

Oliver Peoples Sunglasses // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

Next up we have these beauts from Oliver Peoples. I’ve clearly not moved on from loving a bit of vintage framing and tortoiseshell.

Again another lovely vintage look. I’m also liking the scarf/jumper here, but feel this may be slightly less easy to pull off round LDN, than posing in a Riva. The sunnies, I’m guessing Armani, but its difficult to tell.

I could always fall back on the oul faithful of Oakley, and these Frogskins are available at Oki Ni. But as lovely as they are I’m not into the branding down the arm.

Toms Eyewear // Bainser Menswear Style Blog

Or if I was being a bit charitable I could go for these from TOMS. Ok so they aren’t yet available on the UK site , which is quite frankly a crying shame! But I love the ideology of TOMS. For every pair of shoes or glasses in this case you buy, they donate a pair to people in the developing world. Guilt free fashion is somethign I can live with. Especially when it looks this good.
