Love this @burberry coat in #shortlist today (Taken with instagram)
Dear Bainser,
I’m having winter coat woes and need some help. I have a fantastic Spiewak Parka that is perfect for freezing cold weather, but it’s not the smartest of things and I think it’s about time I bought a second winter coat for those more dressy occasions yet it still needs to look great with jeans.
I notice the Pea Coat comes and goes every winter and I keep toying with the idea, but is there something better out there? Now, I’ve not got hundreds to spend on the coat so it’s High Street all the way!
Thank you. Andrew.
Hi Andrew,
Typical isn’t it, just when we should be packing away our summer clothes out comes the sunshine to muck us around. I’m not complaining mind, I suspect I may be part lizard what with my love of the sunshine. But now is indeed the time to invest in a winter coat.
The Pea coat is a perennial favourite in menswear, and like a good trench it’s pretty much a staple in any mans wardrobe. The question is there anything better out there. It’s very mucha case for different coats for different folks. I for example have yet to see a Duffel that doesn’t remind me of Paddington bear and no amount of marmalade is going to make him stylish (in saying that he did rock a statement red fedora!).
Each winter the Military coat also comes back, sometimes its French, sometimes its Russian, whatever, it’s still a military coat. Last season I went particularly Russian and loved it.
So what am I saying? Is there anything better out there? Yes there is, but only because there always will be. It’s why we both love fashion. The new, the exciting, the fresh. Grab yourself a decent Pea Coat for this season and you’ll be sorted. If you can afford to last only a season or two go more edgy and directional otherwise stay classic. The best one’s out there are still cropped double breasted 6 button ones.Check out All Saints Juror Pea Coat or French Connection’s Restrain Military Coat.
Hope that helps!Nick

Loving this look from Zara! Of recent times I’ve found their winters to be stronger than their summers. But that could be despite my gecko like ability for basking in bright sunshine, something we have particularly lacked this summer I might add, even I have to admit that menswear is better in winter.
Also Zara are clearly still following a Burberry-esque militarism, which always looks good on a man. Largely because it’s designed to intimidate. You are meant to be impressed by military commanders and as such their dress echoes that.

Edun, founded by Ali Hewson (wife of rockstar everyone loves to hate Bono) is a label with very strong ethical credentials. With a styling similar to Reiss 1979 on the high street this label has continued to grow at a steady pace since its inception. Designer Sharon Wachoub is currently at the helm and is continuing the slightly grungy feel of the menswear collection whilst introducing some more tailored elements.
The look and feel of Edun will never totally escape it’s rock heritage, and this is a good thing. I’ve long said about fair trade clothing that it fails in its very first goal. Not to be ethical but to actually be fashionable. Regardless of the treatment of workers, the organic cotton used, or the whole brand image people will not buy ugly clothes at this price point.
I’m no fan of the drop crotched trouser and they are evident throughout the collection, as is a pair of dungarees. Frankly the less said about them the better. Those wanting to know more should buy me cocktail and sit back, the rant will no doubt veer off into the evils of Uggs and Crocs. They are after all on a par.

Right I love this coat, the check is a great size and not too in your face. Its double breasted with a nice high collar. Super warm and super stylish.

Great denim jacket and shirt. Carrot trousers aren’t forgiving and makes many people myself included look as though they have a bad dose of incontinence and are wearing adult diapers. If they look good on you, go for it! Otherwise the colour and single pleat work well.

This whole look is fantastic! Like a combination of ski lodge and bin man. Nope I never thought I’d say that either but there you go.
The tailoring is a bit too soft for my liking but in a casual way works quite well.
Edun is available on net-a-porter, so I’m presuming it will arrive at Mr Porter too, as well as their own website. In the UK & Ireland they are stock in a few stores in London, Bury St Edmunds, Dublin & Dundalk.
If you want to learn more about them they are on @twedun, Facebook and have a tumblr. A chatty and interactive team across the platforms but the tumblr is effectively an online inspiration board for the team, and worth a look.

Through all the doom and gloom of the winter months, one thing has kept me going. An every burgeoning boot fetish. Its becoming more than a little bit of an obsession. Trouble is Winter only lasts so long and well….oh like I care how long winter really lasts. You can never have too many shoes or boots. EVER!
So having established this, can I get them please?? Look how practical they are in the snow! Which am sure we’ll be getting more of soon.
D.S. Dundee. Rock and roll.

You can never have too many accessories, and style does not stop at your fingertips. It should continue on into your home. Not in a vacuous unhappy hipsters kind of way, but simply because after a long day at work you should be coming home to something great. Something within your own budget, but something great.
These blankets are so simple, but given their origins at Monocle magazine they will luxurious. Having employed the looms and skills of the great Scottish company Mackintosh these blankets are a sure think to keep you warm through the winter.
They’re probably big enough to share but, lets be honest with a balnket this nice it is totally acceptable to be greedy.
They’re available online from the Monocle shop a snip at £370.

This morning it’s a bit chilly in London. But its sunny so I am not complaining. Cold and Dry is lovely in comparison to the Cold and wet weather that is clearly on its way.
Apparently we’re due another winter of snow and ice. Let’s hope the trains have learnt how to deal with this. Actually I don’t mind if it does come to a crashing halt. Working from home the odd day isn’t so bad. Hurrah for the t’internet.
New York and New Yorkers are used to dealing with such temperatures. The plunging mercury just makes them add on a couple more layers. They still look stylish as this shot demonstrates.
As it gets colder dig out your denim jacket and layer it under a summer coat. Instant cool and warmth.

Whats to come……
Hello Bo Pressly and a nice bit of androgyny, but to be honest am more interested in the check shirt. Clearly these beauties are not about to leave menswear anytime soon. But its getting colder and more wintery and am loving the more muted colour palette of this shirt.
I’ll be posting some more trends and am thinking of a series of unusual style icons. I’ll keep you posted and hopefully interested. Any recommendations?
Also check out LDNfashion.net where I’ll be recommending the menswear shows to stream etc from London Fashion Week. What with this, work and that marathon thing looming (well April) I’m starting to get a bit busy.
So winter is finally here, actually that’s a complete lie isn’t it. The weather has been freezing for ages with each morning looking like a drunken Mother Nature has been a bit too liberal in applying the body glitter on her way to the club. But worse than winter truly kicking in it’s January. The month we all struggle to shift the turkey baby we grew over Christmas, figure out exactly how those credit cards are going to get paid off before our next holiday (especially as 0% balance transfer deals barely exist anymore), get to the gym, be better people, save the world, cure cancer, develop a teleporter to avoid the commute and in general end all suffering. We try desperately hard to do all of this for a week, maybe two and then berate ourselves as we settle into our old ways no slimmer than when we started but now with the extra expense of a gym we’ll barely look at. Oh I am full of the joys of spring aren’t I…no well that’s because it’s still winter and rotten without even Christmas to look forward to. Grrr grrr bah humbug grrr!!! And other such grumpy noises.
But wait all is not in fact lost!! In case you’ve been under a rock, (which if any of your hangovers were as bad as mine you may well have), there is some good news. Its time for the SALES!!! A time when the cathedrals of consumerism admit they’ve fleeced us and sell the goods we covet at more reasonable prices! Bring it on! And good luck getting between me and that bargain!
So now is the perfect time to spurge the remaining credit and cash on an absolute essential. A winter coat!! Its freezing and you need it. Not only that but thanks to the sales you can be clever, get something simple and stylish, that will last several seasons. Now once again here’s where men are lucky. Our fashion isn’t really the subject of great whims of fancy, trends come and go yes, but not at the frenetic pace of womenswear. This means even something edgy this season will more than likely still look great next season.
Also for once this is a time when sales actually co-exist with the products we need when we need them. The summer sales getting rid of stacks of shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops are great but with autumn breathing down our necks not entirely practical. Now however we have at least another two months of tempestuous weather freezing us to the core. So go grab a new coat, its warmth will make that trek into the dark morning or night just a bit more bearable.
I’ve said before winter is a huge asset to menswear, from layering 3 piece suits that hide the turkey baby of Christmas, to the brilliant opportunities to accessorise with scarves and hats, and the winter coat is no exception. Shy away from the quilted gilets, puffa jacks and parkas and head straight to the proper coats. Trenches, Covets, Great Coats, and Military looks all provide opportunities to enhance your style. Check below for a great photo of the Sartorialist looking effortlessly cool in his Burberry chatting and strolling through Paris.
Personally I get as long a coat as possible without looking like I’ve just escaped the Matrix, that has strong shoulders and a nipped in waist. I may have a million layers underneath but that’s no excuse to look like the Michelin man. Double breasted can widen you if there only 4 buttons, but the military styling with 8 or more buttons down the front can make you look taller and slimmer.
As for colours, don’t be afraid to grab the camel and neutral colours, it’ll brighten your whole outfit and need not look like a football manager. If you looking to dress down, a short denim jacket underneath an open charcoal coat will keep you warm give you an edge on others. If it’s truly cold enough to emasculate brass monkeys, pop your collars and wrap yourself up in oversized college scarf, or even this season’s snood. You’ll be surprised at the versatility of great coat, remaining a wise choice long into spring where it can be worn over t-shirts and fine gauge knits to keep you warm in unpredictable weather.
So there’s my eulogy on a decent winter coat, spend a little more than planned but wisely, and you will be set for a couple of seasons. Getting that coat is reason enough to brave the general melee of the sales, though thankfully I have mine for this season so instead I’ll be encouraging others to risk life and limb, while I enjoy a pint or two in the pub. (Who am I kidding there are way more things I need! Get out of my way! And I don’t care if it’s a bit small I’m on a diet and exercise regime which means I will definitely fit into it by February…or March….April most definitely April!)
So winter is definitely upon us, and despite the brief respite of sunny warm days we got through November are long gone. The sun may be shining today on a gorgeous winter morning, lets not kid ourselves, in a matter of weeks the weather will indeed be miserable. Yes, the annual floods are back, train companies have already ground to a halt completely taken aback by the bizarre arrival of the adverse weather conditions that happen every December, and who knows what cold damp misery awaits us in January (the worst of all months, rubbish weather, poverty after the Christmas over indulgence, not forgetting the huge rush to the gym to shed the extra pounds gained during said over indulgence). More importantly than that however, the advent of central heating presents a challenge to us all. How do you keep stylish all day when you are forced to run the gambit of a -2 degree outside world and 17 degree office?
Layering is key to the success of any winter look these days, and whilst women have the upper hand here with a myriad of knits, pashminas, gilets, tights and leggings, men are not left behind. The 3 piece suit and overcoat will take you from your under-floor heated penthouse, outside into the cold, into your chauffer driven car, and then the office, (or more likely warm home, freezing walk to the tube, through the underground sweatbox, and into the office) without forcing you to lose your impeccable style.
3 piece suits are on every catwalk this season from D&G & Gucci, to Paul Smith & Paul Costelloe. The secret of the 3 piece suit is the extra layer of structure it gives you. Think of the waistcoat as magic pants for men, instantly improving your silhouette. On top of this the subtle layering means you’re ready for anything the great British winter throws at you, without resorting to looking like some oversized parka clad yeti.
As for the overcoat, it’s as though winter weather was designed specifically to make men look good. The right coat will strengthen your shoulders, broaden your chest, and shrink your waist in ways the summer T-shirt never can. But more of that to follow….
