Being made to wait until menswear day can be torture for me. Day after day at London Fashion Week, wonderful creative pieces flow past me, all brilliant and all out of my reach unless I decide on a major shift in lifestyle. So any glimpse of something, anything I could potentially add to my over stuffed wardrobe is welcomed with open arms. Prophetik early, (ok ok 10.30) Sunday morning was one such delight. Now before I start can I just say I am an avid supporter of conservation, raising awareness of animals plight, and indeed collaboration between fashion and anything charitable. In light of this I learnt that the plural of rhino is rhino, and that the rate at which rhino are being poached has escalated to truly horrific levels due to ridiculous beliefs in the medicinal powers of rhino horn. This must stop now, or in less than fifteen years wild rhino will be extinct. I also learnt I never want to see a mutilated rhino carcass before breakfast again. So thank you Prophetik for bringing the issue to my attention, I guess I’ll just have to man up regarding the second part.
Courtly Love was the title of the collection and we were transported to a time post revolution when the French aristocracy were clinging onto what they knew, for a joint menswear and womenswear collection. Dilapidated grandeur is a swift way to my heart. Miss Havisham tattered damask silks, some grubby knees and evocations of bygone glories are a quick way to inspire me. Maybe it’s the thought of love lost, who knows? Whether a dip-dyed empire line gown the colour of encroaching mold or stunning threadbare dress that evoked images of a dramatic night time escape from the family chateau, this collection contained beautifully twisted elements of this. Unfortunately, whether it was through fabric selection, fabrication or construction as a whole the collection sailed too close to costume for me.
Still brimful of literal historical references the menswear by and large avoided a similar fate. There may be more longevity in such pieces of menswear than womens who knows? Maybe I was giddy with the thought of some clothes I could actually wear. Kilts almost risqué in their shortness, a chunky yet light knit over black militaristic jodhpurs, and cropped Westwood like jackets, all made their way down the catwalk and could quite easily find their way on to my wishlist. In particular the black and white check coat and waistcoat, working brilliantly over the high waisted trousers. This is before we even mention the magnificent embellished charcoal great. Which garnered knowing looks amongst the front row attendees. This was something covetable, and could quite easily be fought over once the collection hits the stores. I would happily have lifted it off the models shoulders right there and then, if I thought I could have gotten away with it.
Prophetik needs time and space to continue to grow, London Fashion Week and Vauxhall Fashion Scout are great incubators of talent so next season should be stronger. Bizarrely the menswear succeeded in it’s rebirth of past times, where this caused the womenswear to flounder slightly. It’s hard to win a battle on more than one front, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

Ok, ok, so I swore I wouldn’t do this I really really tried. I’m desperately avoiding posting about Valentine’s day. Why? Well for a start I may be married but I don’t really do Valentine’s day anyway. I am the worlds worst romantic, genuinely rubbish, the first time I brought my husband to Pont des Arts in Paris (all be it accidentally) I regaled him on the beautiful story of lovers locking a padlock to the bridge to seal their love. He looked at me wondering at what point I would reveal our lock. Needless to say I didn’t. Yes I am that bad a romantic! But this, this caught my eye. This managed to fight through my cynicism about the Hallmark day. What it is it?
Personalised Kicks!

Offspring at Selfridges is offering a one off opportunity when you buy a new pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars, to get them personalised. Not only that but custimisation experts will be on hand to make sure you get it right.
You know for all that us fashion folk harp on about sky high heels I can guarantee come day 3 of fashion week, the most common piece of footwear on editors soles is rarely Louboutins or Choos, but Cons, (at least until it’s time to hit the parties).
If you are going to do Valentine’s day, always always be original and always think about the person you’re buying for. Being individual and thoughtful is worth far more to true love than any clichéd trinket. The graphics cost from £15 for one side, so aren’t expensive, and with 200 different options to chose from you’ll def be on to a winner. So even a completely feckless romantic like me could score well on hallmark day!

Ok so its 41:32 seconds long. I’ve not watched all of it yet, but I’ve seen the trailers. This is Tom Ford, and the video is great insight into his mind, his creative process and more. Shot by the Oprah Winfrey Network the trailers alone caused great excitement amongst the anyone interested in fashion and this great designer.
It’s amazing so many people I’ve met seem to have a ‘Tom Ford’ story, his drive and ambition is legendary. His resurrection of Gucci will be part of fashion folklore for ever, as will his scandalous and overtly sexual advertising campaigns. Not to mention his film work, his menswear line, and more.
Watch it if for no other reason than it’s Mr Ford for nearly 42 whole minutes.

It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these posts. But here’s a look at some of my own work, sketches and designs. Though my core style values have remained the same I’d definitely say things have evolved since I sketched these. Unfortunately my most reason work is embargoed by the office. I’ll try and sneak somethings through in the new year, but by the time I can it’s often already in store.
In the depths of winter I can be seen in the great coat. It’s too warm to wear any other time.

Oh and it’s not just about the men, here’s a capsule collection I did for womenswear…

There are many ways to run a giveaway. Some are bad, some are good, some are so convuluted that no matter how much you want to win you can stomach, tweeting, following, commenting, posting a witty video and then somehow encourage 37 of your best mates to do the same.
Start are thankfully not like that.
The giveaway is ridiculously simple! Donate some cash to a great charity (Jeans for Genes) and….nope that’s just it. I would recommend leaving a way for them to get in contact with you though.
And in return for your good deed what could you win? A pair of Acne or Nudie jeans.
It doesnt matter if you’re a boy or a girl they have a boys and girls pair to give away in each brand. There’s no minimum donation, but dont be too stingy people it’s for a great charity and is a great comp. Just make sure enter before the 16th October.
Actually don’t! DO NOT ENTER THIS COMPETITION!! I want those jeans!*
*yes it’s selfish but I don’t care I want those jeans! Oh fine donate away, and good luck.
I think my friend Ollie is beginning to think of me as some sort of fashion talisman for shows. Last season I cajoled her into joining me at Charlie Le Mindu, which left us both reeling and a little delirious in very very good way. So far this season I’ve dragged her along to Unconditional and Jayne Pierson, both of which were inspiring. Having left her quaffing champers with Notion magazine at the esthetica brunch to check out another show we caught up on the front row of the show. Glancing around we saw a very edgy and beautiful crowd. The venue was just ramshackle and industrial enough to compliment the crowd and as Jodie Harsh’s music began pumping the event could easily have shrugged off it’s fashion show mantle and descended into a full on club night. Jodie herself was seated in the front row just opposite alongside Pete Burns and partner.
Unconditional are growing rapidly and with collections like this you can see why. The womenswear was slick in both tailoring and draping, starting in black moving through brilliant yellows and pinks and into a deep burgundy.
When androgyny is done well it draws strengths from both genders and this collection certainly did that. A burgundy tailored jacket with black chiffon tails certainly highlighted Unconditional’s great eye for detail and balance.
As for the menswear…I’ll admit I was late to the party on this. Maybe I’m just not cool enough or something. But I feel in love back in June or so with their directional tailoring and cutting techniques. Menswear has a predefined set of rules that you must obey and to my delight Unconditional bend these as far as they will go. The brilliant colour and checks in the menswear had me clamouring for next summer already and I haven’t even psyched myself up for winter.
In addition to the collection I was delighted to spot Unconditional’s collaboration with the very lovely Úna Burke (I can say this as I met her later that evening and we joked about how hot a models ass looked in a pair of her leather hotpants!). Úna first showed an installation at the Hospital Club last season and has fast become an editorial favourite of the likes of Dazed and Confused. Her leather strapwork harness and gauntlets were stunning. Their apparent intricate nature is based on a simple yet beautiful framework. I have no idea where I would wear either but that doesn’t mean I don’t desperately want them!
I could harp on about this collection for hours, but I’d soon run out of synonyms for amazing and I’d rather not sound like some sort of sycophant. So let’s leave it that I am a massive fan and quite frankly you should be to.
So I dont normally write about womenswear but when a good friend seats you behind Alexandra Shulman & Harold Tilman it’s prob the least you can do to jot down a few words. The Great British Summer or at least our childhood memories of it that actually had sunshine seem to be a recurring trend this season. There were definite elements of this at Jasper but only after having reimagined by a modernist architect.
Strong and immaculate lines graced the catwalk in a brilliant white punctuated occasionally with fuchsia, red and black. Thigh high splits were the order of the day and the back was without a doubt the erogenous zone of choice. It’s a tough look to pull of if you aren’t a model but given that items will only be available to order and Jasper runs a semi-couture house maybe you could get them tweaked.
Stand out pieces were the colour blocked red on white shift dress, and two stunning white dresses one with an angular powerful glazed tulle cape, looking both diaphanous and powerful, the other with slits up the side front and opposing side back looked breathtaking. Once again the problem with simplicity and looking effortless is a single stitch out of place destroys a piece. The showroom was apparently beavering away until 8 am to finish the collection and this dedication really paid off. Last season I loved the panelled dresses that were cunningly only stitch on the corners. This season the wonderfully finished open seams were back but in a more subtle way giving us the smallest hint of skin when we least expected it. Backs were either bare or with crossing straps like the most exquisite apron, and this is meant as a compliment, or with razor sharp racer backs.
To top this off the accessories complimented the idea of invisible strength and beauty with clear or blood red perspex clutches and handbags.
ps I soo need to get a new camera!

So the Met enjoyed more than 600,000 visitors to the undoubtedly amazing Savage Beauty exhibition of McQueens work. I could pretend I wasn’t disappointed the exhibition didn’t launch here in London, but my mother always taught not to lie.
The fact is there is no better city in the world to showcase McQueen’s work and talent than London, and most probably no better museum than the V&A.
So a campaign has been launched by Melanie Rickey, to bring the exhibtion home. Backed by Grazia, Katie Grand of LOVE, Lucy Yeomans of Harpers Bazaar, and more, a petition has been set up and momentum is building.
Please sign the petition below. Retweet and resend this post and the petition to everyone you know. McQueen was an utter genius and his home city should be lauding him like the champion he was.
Who knows, maybe just maybe we could go one further than New York and include some of his stunning menswear? But lets get the ball rolling with some baby steps first.

Everyone remembers their first pair of Dr Marten’s, well everyone except me. You see to my shame I’ve never owned a pair. Yes, yes I know, how I’ve managed to get to 30 without owning a pair is beyond me too. Please don’t judge. I said don’t judge. When you spend the vast majority of your life either in school or mucking about on boats Dr Marten’s as fantastic as they may be aren’t so practical. That and well to be honest, I never really bought into the brand, I certainly wasn’t part of your stereotypical Dr Marten customer. This is however about to change. Dr Marten’s new campaign is all about you. Your firsts, first heartbreak, first love, first tattoo, first rave and naturally your first Dr Marten’s. #firstandforever is all about you, your friends and your memories.
The website guides you through not just your first, but everyone elses. Lets you shop online and see the brilliant new products in all their glory. It’s clearly been well thought through as its easy to navigate and to be honest quite fun to get involved with.
With Agyness Deyn and Ash as the faces of the campaign, Dr Marten’s are staying true to their status as an iconic British brand. They are someone you can trust, someone you know, and someone you can share your firsts with. It’s not just about the shoes, as wicked as they are, it’s much more.
Lucky enough to see the launch of this campaign, which happened simultaneously in New York and London, I also got to see the Autumn Winter collection. If you’ve never before bit the bullet and bought a pair of Dr Martens now is the time to change your mind and of course if you do, share your story. The traditional greats are obviously still there, but new texture’s like ponyskin and oilslick are also being introduced, and they look fantastic.
Also being launched are some fantastic accessories including these schoolboy satchels which have catapulted themselves to the top of my wishlist! They come in a huge range of colours from traditional browns, and oxbloods to white, pink and combinations of all the above.
What are my firsts? Well headover to #firstandforever and see if you can find them. I’ve so far shared my first tattoo, first gig and first festival. If you want to know more just ask. Oh and once I get my first pair of Dr Marten’s I’ll be sharing that too.
The launch itself took place in the very lovely Aubin Cinema in Shoreditch, which I will most definitely be heading back to. Cocktails and popcorn as you watch your film is possibly one of the most genius ideas I have ever heard of.

Each season London goes a little bit crazy for fashion week. I mean at the end of the day it’s just a trade show. No one gets their knickers in a twist about Plumbers Expo or whatever it may be. Then again you don’t see the likes of Olivia Palermo, Anna Wintour and more rocking up to see the latest innovations in U-bend technology. But seriously people it’s just a trade show. Naturally when I’m stressed outside a show dying to get in I try and convince myself of the same thing.
Now Richard Nicoll and Vodafone have teamed up to let 10 mere mortals in to experience the shoulder barging, seat stealing high life for themselves, through the Vodafone VIP experience. If I wasn’t already with a rival I’d be tempted to enter the comp myself! I’d prob have more chance of getting tickets to what is normally one of the highlights of London Fashion Week.
Other events being planned including the launch of some new accessories and a personal appearance by Richard in the Vodafone flagship store.
If you are a Vodafone customer all you have to do is register your interest on Vodafone’s website and hope for the best.

Last night saw the launch of party to celebrate Dolce & Gabbana’s arrival at NET-A-PORTER and MR PORTER. Over three hundred lovely guests ventured westwards and scooted round the late night shoppers desperate to get into Hollister for yet another brightly coloured t-shirt. Though to be fair that was prob just me, am sure the VIPs were ushered through in a much more subtle way.
Hosted by NET-A-PORTER & MR PORTER in their very lovely offices, we drank (delicious Grey Goose martinis and Martini Gold - lush and am hangover free this morning), celeb spotted, had a canape or two and gossiped.
The party was fantastic, the music banging and if you haven’t heard of Sunday Girl yet, make it your mission today. Her set midway through the night was fantastic.
The great, the good, the ‘anyone that could get their hands on a ticket’ were there. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were at hand to chat with everyone, which they did impeccably making even the most lowly blogger (moi) feel at home. Quick thanks to AnastasiaDuck for taking our photo. As soon as I have it in my grubby digital paws it will be going up here.

It was great to meet several other bloggers and chat about random things while surrounded by many beautiful people, including Queen Latifah, Naomi Campbell, Jo Wood, Patrick Grant, Jade Parfitt, Messrs David Gandy and Douglas Booth. Both of whom I can personally vouch indeed are gorgeous in the flesh.

True to their social media embracing selves in one room was a projection of our live tweets using the #dolcegabbanalive. (A photo of which will be up here as soon as I get back to my MacBook) Though am somewhat hoping my ‘Shower, G&T and Nina Simone prep tweet may not have made it! The other rooms were filled quickly with celebs, and I’m gutted I didn’t leap on the Vespas complete with wind machine and Italian backdrop to be papped for my souvenir postcard. The offices themselves were lovely and impeccably stylish, which is exactly what we would expect from Jeremy Langmead and Natalie Massenet. Though I’m told the ‘chill out rooms’ aka meeting rooms are not normally so chock full of celeb loveliness. A fact I’m choosing to ignore.

All in all it was great night, and the chat continued in the taxi back into the heart of South East London with fellow bloggers 00o00 & Anastasia and Duck. But we were really there to welcome Dolce & Gabbana to the MR PORTER fold so have a look here at the great range available now, and for the ladies check out NET-A-PORTER.

Every once in a while when blogging you get a gift or two. It’s lovely, it brightens up your day knowing that someone likes your blog and opinion enough to reward you or bribe you for some love. It’s important to be honest though when reviewing people’s collections, if you think they’re rubbish say so.
Client however have no fear there. I love the tshirt they sent me. Black on black is more often than not a winner for me. I like the subtlety, I also absolutely love the print. Fitted is also a definite winner, though due to a slight oversight by the lovely Beth, my first tshirt was a leetle more fitted than planned. Silver lining though after asking her nicely she sent me a new one, and has let me give one of you lucky readers the original.

It’s a size medium for girls (though boys feel free to enter too!) and is lush. It comes in some lovely Client packaging and will be sent to you as quickly as possible. So what do you have to do get this?
Simply visit this page (which if you’re reading this you’ve done), then tweet a link back here mentioning @bainser, @ClientA and #ClientTgiveaway. The draw will take place on Wednesday so you have 48 hours or so to retweet the hell out of this and spread the word and love.
Oh and I’d also advise both girls and boys to have boys to have a look over at their website. The lookbook is stunning. The collection has all the hallmarks of a great British heritage brand in the making. Who knows with a bit of love from us, the menswear collection may grow even more. Maybe we can follow up with a giveaway for the boys, if we generate enough love. I’d love to give you my tshirt but I’ve already worn it out and received too many compliments to give it to anyone. Yeah I’m selfish like that.
Good luck!!!
When you look at fashion everyday it’s so easy to become jaded. I guess its prob the same for accountants and spreadsheets or something similar. So when something makes you sit back and seriously take notice, it should be lauded.
This is beautiful. End of!
